Minutes Of The February 17, 2011 Board Meetings

MTOA BOARD MEETING  I
17 February 2011

Meeting called to order at 6:46 p.m. by president Cathy Kennan.  Present were Stephanie Burnam, Nancy Ebersole, Randall Edwards, Cathy Kennan, Nancy King, Myron Krueger, Randy McDonald, Lee Thornburg, Susan Wertenberger, and Roz Tuerk.

The minutes were approved as  read.

1- Financial Report -- total income for the past year - $215,763.71 -- total expenses -- $215,348.40 --- Net Income -- $415.31
Randal also provided some interesting general information:  During the past year MTOA was paid for 214 events worked.  938 checks were written.  79 officials were paid $600 or more.
Moved to accept the financial report,  seconded and passed.

2 - Website -- There was discussion on what to do about the website now that Jim Garcia is no longer with the organization (MTOA).
It was brought out that the website costs (about) $120 a year.
    Not many people use it.
Email is about all it is used for.
Randy suggested creating a blog.  He also pointed out the blogs are free.
    There was discussion.
Motion made to let the website "die a natural death".  Seconded and passed.

3 - Randall then brought up for discussion that Angel Martinez goes all out for the MTOA in securing/providing the use of Grapevine High School as the site of our
certification/recertification school.  It is a facility that all nation instructors have praised.  There should be something that MTOA can do to say thank you.  It was mentioned that he has a tournament in the spring and that we (MTOA) could provide officials for it.  There was also more discussion on using this as training for new officials.
     Randall will follow-up on this.

4 - Myron gave a brief report on what happened at the Texas Sectional Meeting.
There was discussion on the background check.  That all referees should make sure that those they wish to hire have passed it.
Myron als pointed out that various forms (for tournaments etc.) that had to be gotten through the TTA are now available on line.  These are generic and for local use.

5 - Next item on the agenda was the election of officers for the coming year.
The nominations were:   president                 Nancy King
                                       vice-president          Susan Wertenberger
                                       treasurer                  Randall Edwards
                                       secretary                  Roz Tuerk
Since there were no nominations from the floor a motion was made to accept this slate.  Seconded and passed.

Call for adjournment.  Seconded and passed.
Meeting adjourned.

MTOA BOARD MEETING II (began immediately - same members in attendance)

Meeting called to order by president Nancy King.
Nancy brought up for discussion the training of new officials.   Due to Susan Wertenberger's current obligations she has recommended Seande Pulley to take over the training and shadowing.  It was felt that some restructuring was in order.
Discussion:  Let the trainer evaluate the trainee.  Referee recommendations should also be a part of this.
Nancy will talk with Seande about this.
The discussion then moved on to how "roving 101" fit into this.  It was recommended that the actual roving need not be (the current) two 6 hour shifts.  That one shift would probably be enough.  The discussion then moved to communicating with referees regarding the new official.  It was also felt that the scheduling of the roving classes be on a "need" basis.

Motion made to adjourn.
Seconded and passed.
Meeting adjourned 7:49 p.m.

Upcoming Roving 101 Class

Attention all new officials in the Metroplex--there will be a Roving 101 class taught on March 1, 2011, at Brookhaven Country Club.

The Roving 101 class deals with all the basics for a new official and is required of all new officials in the Metroplex.  The class covers such things as:  introduction to the MTOA, finding work as an official, uniforms, Nucula, officiating opportunities, and much more valuable information.

If you would like a copy of the curriculum, send a request to:  metroplexofficials@yahoo.com and a copy will be emailed to you.

In Memoriam: Chuck McDermott

The MTOA family mourns the loss of our fellow official, Chuck McDermott.  Chuck passed away on Sunday, February 20th from complications following a lung biopsy.  Chuck had been an MTOA official for five years and had worked numerous grass-roots tournaments in the Metroplex.  He will be missed by his officials family.

Chuck's memorial service will be Friday, February 25, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Richardson.  The church is located at 75 and Arapaho in Richardson.

His family has requested in lieu of flowers that a donation be made to the American Cancer Society.

A Word From Our New President

MTOA Board of Directors and members:
Thank you for your vote of confidence in selecting me to serve as your president for 2011.  One of my goals is to develop better communication between our board members and the numerous officials that serve the community in the metropolitan area.
Plans are already underway to establish a calendar with dates for training new officials by means of the Roving 101 class and the additional shadowing with a veteran official.  A new group of officials have taken and passed the provisional test, verified  a current vision exam, and authorized a background check.  Dates for the Roving 101 class have been set and that information will be distributed as soon as details are worked out.
The MTOA board encourages officials to contact a member if there is a question or concern that needs to be addressed.  Please feel free to contact one of them at any time.   An  MTOA blog is currently being set up.  Important dates and other information will be posted on the blog.  That address will made available very soon.
It is the express purpose and desire of the MTOA board to serve you.

Nancy King
President, MTOA
